Tools to Fight MOC Burdens

Mississippi physicians have struggled with MOC for years, andnow there's help--the MOC Playbook developed by MSMA. The Playbook is a set of communication tools ready to deploy to your national specialty boards and local hospitals. By engaging with boards and hospitals on MOC reform, the decision-making power stays with you. The MOC Playbook can be a valuable tool going forward on this issue. Please contact us if you have any questions about it.

AQ/AQ Program Put in Place

Quality Measures Replace Chart Review
The State Board of Medical Licensure still requires a physician to review charts of a collaborating APRN. However, the Mississippi Board of Nursing recently changed its rules and removed the requirement that an APRN have a percentage of charts reviewed by a collaborating physician. The new rule went into effect July 29. The Board of Nursing has replaced chart review with a formal Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement (QA/QI) program to analyze quality of care being delivered by the APRN and collaborating physician.
But New Commission Could Delay Rule
This rule will be subject to the oversight of the newly created Occupational Licensing Review Commission (OLRC). All new regulations must first be reviewed by the new Commission, which could approve, veto or modify them.

Healthcare Confusion in Washington

Sen. Sanders Proposes 'Health Care for All'
DACA, tax reform and a budget deadline have dominated the conversation on Capital Hill after the Labor Day break. But one big issue remains unaddressed: Repealing and replacing Obamacare. Two senators--Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Bill Cassidy (R-LA)--yesterday announced their plan for overturning the Affordable Care Act. The bill includes, among other things, cuts to Medicaid and eliminating the individual mandate. Like the previous attempt in the Senate, the bill will need 50 of the 52 Republicans to pass.
Meanwhile, on the other end of the idealogical spectrum, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) announced his proposal for "Medicare for All," a logical extension of his presidential campaign assertion that health care is a right. While the idea is expected to go nowhere, that view of the debate is being talked about openly more and more in Washington.
