MSMA Proposes "It Takes Three" Rules to Licensure Board

When: Nov. 15 @ 1 p.m.
Where: 1867 Crane Ridge Dr.
Jackson, MS 39216
Three New Rules Will Impact Opioid Crisis
After carefully studying the new proposed rules from the State Board of Medical Licensure, MSMA proposed three effective and far-reaching changes to opioid prescribing in the state. We are calling these rules "It Takes Three." Simply put, the changes are:
  • Check the PMP before prescribing a Schedule 2 opioid such as hydrocodone, oxycodone or codeine.
  • Limit a prescription for a Schedule 2 opioid to a seven-day supply.

  • Check the PMP before prescribing a benzodiazepine and limit the script to a 90-day supply.
When these changes are put in place and enforced, we will see a change in opioid prescribing in our state.

MSMA will be at the MSBML hearing on Nov. 15 to present our recommendations to the Board in full. You can read the full text of our letter to the MSBML here.
Outreach to Other Licensing Boards Underway
Without prescribing changes to other licensing board rules, the opioid/heroin crisis will not be successfully abated in the state. MSMA has taken our "It Takes Three" campaign to other prescribing authorities to bring them on board.
Pres. Trump Declares Opioid 'Public Health Emergency'
Falls Short of Declaring 'National Emergency'
Pres. Donald Trump on Thursday declared the opioid/heroin crisis a "public health emergency." The move came more than three months after his Opioid Commission recommended declaring a national state of emergency on the matter. Opioid overdoses kill more than 100 people a day in the United States, making it a deeply rooted, national crisis. Details remain unknown, but administration officials mentioned an expanded role for telemedicine, speeding up DHS hiring and allowing states to shift existing federal grant money toward the crisis. Experts estimate the national cost of addressing the opioid/heroin crisis will be tens of billions of dollars. It remains to be seen if a fiscal commitment to fighting the crisis will follow today's declaration. Meanwhile, communities in Mississippi and other states continue to suffer.
