WHO WE ARE
The Mississippi State Medical Association (MSMA) is a professional membership association for physicians, residents and medical students in Mississippi. Any physician with a license to practice medicine in Mississippi and any student enrolled in a Mississippi medical school is eligible for membership. Retired physicians also comprise an important segment of MSMA's membership.

WHAT WE DO
The MSMA is a powerful advocate on health care issues at the Mississippi State Capitol and in Washington DC. MSMA speaks for physicians on a wide range of advocacy topics including tort reform, scope of practice, contracting, medical malpractice, and public health and safety issues. The goal is to make sure that all Mississippians have access to high quality health care. MSMA also represents physicians before regulatory agencies and works with third party payers to reduce administrative hassles and solve problems.
MSMA provides public education and materials for physicians to give their patients on issues such as advanced health care directives and tort reform. MSMA also plays an active role in the American Medical Association (AMA), bringing issues that reflect Mississippi concerns to the national level.
MSMA's continuing medical education activities, seminars and reports, and publications keep members well informed on current issues, events and legislative activities.
Products and services tailored for physicians, their clinics, and their families are available at the MSMA Marketplace.
HOW WE ARE ORGANIZED
The MSMA House of Delegates develops policies and elects MSMA members to serve as officers, trustees and delegates to the AMA House of Delegates. At the MSMA Annual Meeting component medical societies are represented by delegates whom they select to serve in the House of Delegates. The number of delegates is determined by the overall membership of the society.
At the Annual Meeting, the MSMA House of Delegates discusses and adopts resolutions and accepts reports on various activities. Resolutions may be proposed by any component society or by any MSMA member and may be amended during debate. Adopted resolutions become policy of MSMA. Between sessions of the MSMA House of Delegates, the MSMA Board of Trustees manages the ongoing affairs of the association and makes policy decisions. Voting members of the Board of Trustees include MSMA officers, representatives from the eight trustee districts, one representative from the Medical Student Section and one from the Resident Physician Section. Members of the MSMA delegation to the AMA also attend meetings of the Board of Trustees. The MSMA Board of Trustees meets quarterly during the year.
MSMA has unified membership with the local component medical societies and with the national association, the American Medical Association. |
